NEWS STORY
ON THIS DAY: JULY 5, 2006
Paul Hassall 05 July 2008
Rafael Benitez bolstered his defensive options on this day two years ago when he brought in Fabio Aurelio from his former club Valencia.
The Brazilian full-back had helped win a Spanish La Liga title under Benitez and became the first Brazilian to play for Liverpool.

"Fabio is a player with a lot of quality and he is a really good signing for us," Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv at the time.

"His technical ability is fantastic and he has a great left foot and provides the team with a lot of options. He has a really good mentality and he is a winner."

Aurelio was delighted to complete his Bosman signing for the Reds and outlined the main factors beihnd his decision to move to Merseyside.

"There are three main reasons why I joined Liverpool," he said.

"Firstly, the history and tradition of the club is a huge attraction as is the chance to play in the English league because the Premiership has always appealed to me.

"It's great for me to be given this chance to come here and understand more about what football in this country is like. Of course, the manager was a big factor as well because we worked together at Valencia and had some really good times.

"When a manager who you like and trust wants you to move to a club the size of Liverpool then you don't say no. Rafa was the most important factor in my decision to sign."
