All eyes were on Fernando Torres but it was Steven Gerrard who upstaged him with a sensational late winner at Villa Park.
The Reds new record signing did look sharp during the game and played a part in the opening goal, but Gerrard's moment of brilliance ensured a winning start to the 2007-2008 season for Rafael Benitez's men.
With Scott Carson ineligible to play against the Reds, Stuart Taylor took his place between the posts and had a fantastic game.
Danish international Martin Laursen fired Dirk Kuyt's cross into his own net for the opening goal, but thanks largely to the heroics of Taylor Liverpool couldn't find that second goal.
Villa looked as though they had stolen a point when Gareth Barry equalised from the penalty spot after Jamie Carragher had been penalised for handball in the 85th minute.
However, Liverpool weren't to be denied and straight from the restart the Reds got a free-kick. Gerrard stepped up to take it and curled the ball beyond the reach of Taylor to give Liverpool the three points.
